How long can you leave a dog alone? Hours at home, nights and vacations

How long can you leave a dog alone? For most adult dogs, about four hours at a time, say the UK charities PDSA, Dogs Trust and the RSPCA. The American Kennel Club puts the outer limit at six to eight hours without a toilet break. Puppies need much shorter stretches. For a night or a vacation away, a dog needs someone there.

Key takeaways

  • PDSA, Dogs Trust and the RSPCA, three UK animal charities, say most adult dogs should be left alone for no more than about four hours at a time.
  • The American Kennel Club puts the outer limit at six to eight hours alone without a chance to relieve themselves; that is a limit, not a target for a normal day.
  • A dog should not be left alone overnight or for a vacation; plan for someone in your home, a friend or family member, or a boarding kennel.
  • The American Kennel Club guide says a puppy under 10 weeks should be alone for no more than 1 hour, rising to 6 hours at 6 months.
  • The BC SPCA says to contact your veterinarian if your dog has moderate to severe separation anxiety.

There is no single number that fits every dog. Age, health and what your dog is used to all change the answer. Still, the main animal welfare groups land in a similar place, and it is shorter than many owners expect.

How long can you leave a dog alone?

For most adult dogs, about four hours at a time is the usual limit. Guidance varies by group and by dog, so here is what each one says.

  • BC SPCA: “Most dogs can cope with separation from family members for a few hours.” It adds that some dogs feel anxious “when left even for a few minutes.” (BC SPCA, Dog care)
  • PDSA, a UK vet charity: “Four hours is the longest that dogs should routinely be left alone for but every dog will be different.” (PDSA)
  • Dogs Trust, a UK dog charity: “You should avoid leaving your dog for more than four hours.” (Dogs Trust)
  • RSPCA, the UK animal welfare charity, advises “no longer than four hours so they have opportunities to exercise, go to the toilet, and spend time with people.” (RSPCA)
  • American Kennel Club: a veterinary behaviourist it interviewed recommends “no more than six to eight hours alone without a chance to relieve themselves.” (AKC, updated January 31, 2024)

So four hours is the everyday guide from three charities, and six to eight hours is an outer limit from the AKC. That limit is about bathroom breaks. It is not a target for a normal day.

How long you are away Is it OK for a dog alone? What to arrange
Up to about 4 hours Usually, for a calm adult dog Water, a safe room, something to chew
4 to 8 hours Not as a habit Someone to let your dog out and keep them company
Overnight No Someone in the home with your dog
2 days or more No Care at home, a trusted friend, or a boarding kennel
Puppies Much shorter, by age See the puppy table below
Senior dogs or dogs with health needs Ask your vet Someone who checks often or stays

For those first hours alone, a treat puzzle gives a dog a slow, quiet job.

For dogs who chew, a hollow rubber toy stuffed with food does a similar job, and freezing it first makes it last longer.

Can I leave my dog alone overnight?

No, not on their own. A night away means the evening, the night and the morning, which is far past four hours and past the AKC’s six to eight hours too. Your dog would miss at least one toilet break, a meal and any company.

If you have to be away for one night, plan it like a short trip. Ask a friend or family member your dog knows, book a pet sitter who stays the night, or book a boarding kennel your dog has visited before.

How long can you leave a dog home alone while on vacation?

You can’t, unless someone is caring for your dog. None of the guidance above is measured in days. Every one of these groups talks about hours.

For a trip, your choices are:

  1. Someone stays in your home. Your dog keeps their own bed, smells and routine.
  2. A friend or family member takes your dog, or comes in through the day.
  3. A boarding kennel. Visit first and ask what a normal day looks like for the dogs.

Each one suits some dogs better than others. The guide to pet sitter vs boarding compares them side by side, and the pet sitter checklist lists what to leave for whoever cares for your dog.

What about dog anxiety when left alone?

Some dogs find any time alone hard. The BC SPCA’s separation anxiety fact sheet says a dog that feels anxious when you are gone may:

  • urinate when you come home
  • whine, bark or howl when left alone
  • be destructive when left alone
  • try to escape, scratching or chewing at exits
  • show stress through lack of appetite, restlessness, panting or drinking a lot

The same fact sheet notes that some dogs who chew or bark are simply bored, not anxious. A key clue is stress that starts while you are still getting ready to leave.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. If you see these signs, call your vet. The BC SPCA says to contact your veterinarian if your dog has moderate to severe separation anxiety. While a dog is being helped, it suggests not leaving them alone in the place where they usually feel anxious. Its options include leaving your dog “with a sitter or at doggie daycare” or having someone stay at home.

A trip away can be harder on an anxious dog than a workday. Someone your dog already knows, in a home your dog already knows, can make the change smaller.

How long can puppies and senior dogs be left alone?

Puppies need much shorter stretches than adult dogs. Senior dogs vary, so ask your vet.

Puppies. PDSA says four hours “would generally be too long for a very active, young puppy.” The American Kennel Club (updated October 29, 2025) gives this guide by age:

Puppy’s age Longest time alone (AKC guide)
Under 10 weeks 1 hour
10 to 12 weeks 2 hours
3 months 3 hours
4 months 4 hours
5 months 5 hours
6 months 6 hours
Over 6 months 6 to 8 hours at most

The AKC says that from 3 months, puppies “can usually hold it for an hour for each month they’ve been alive.” Keep in mind that the UK charities above still suggest about four hours for adult dogs. Teaching a puppy to be alone works best in small, gradual steps, and Dogs Trust says it “should ideally start when they are still a puppy.”

Senior dogs. PDSA says four hours “might be fine for an older dog.” That depends on the dog. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that age-related changes, including pain and cognitive decline, can bring on new behaviour problems. One sign it lists is a dog that “does not tolerate being left home alone.” VCA’s advice is simple: “Tell your veterinarian if you notice any changes in your pet’s behavior.”

If your older dog is on medication or has new habits, write it all down for whoever cares for them while you are away.

How I care for dogs while you travel

At Stay Sit Snuggle, I do overnight stays in your home. I don’t offer drop-in visits. I sleep at your place, so your dog has someone there at night and their routine stays the same.

Before any booking, I come to your home to meet your dog. You walk me through meals, habits and anything that worries your dog. I post my availability by date ranges, and I am already taking bookings into 2027. Summer 2026 was my busiest in years, with a record eight new clients.

I sit for dogs and cats on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver and Edmonton. On the Island, that means Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Cumberland, Courtenay and Comox. See the local pages for pet sitting in Nanaimo and pet sitting in the Comox Valley, or read more about in-home pet sitting.

New to hiring a sitter? Start with how to find a pet sitter. If you have a cat too, how long you can leave a cat alone covers the other half of the house.

Questions people ask

Is it OK to leave my dog alone for a full workday?

Not as a habit. PDSA says four hours is the longest a dog should routinely be alone. If you are often out longer, it suggests someone who can come to your home through the day, or a doggy day care.

Why is my dog unsettled after a long holiday at home with me?

PDSA says dogs can feel bored and lonely when life goes back to normal after a holiday. It suggests easing them back with short spells alone, then building up the time.

Does a crate make it safe to leave my dog alone longer?

No. The BC SPCA warns against using a crate without slow training to stop an anxious dog from chewing or barking, because it can make the anxiety worse. A crate does not change how long a dog should be alone.

Who should I call if I think my dog has separation anxiety?

Start with your vet. The BC SPCA says to contact your veterinarian if your dog has moderate to severe separation anxiety, and its AnimalKind program lists humane trainers in B.C.
